The Majapahit Empire (1293–c. 1520) was a powerful Hindu-Buddhist maritime kingdom based in East Java, often considered one of Indonesia's greatest states. At its peak under King Hayam Wuruk and Prime Minister Gajah Mada (1334-1389), it controlled vast trade routes across Southeast Asia. It is a foundation of modern Indonesian identity.
A little physical evidence of Majapahit remains. Majapahit did produce physical evidence: the main ruins dating from the Majapahit period are clustered in the Trowulan, Mojokerto district area , which was the royal capital of the kingdom. The area has become the centre for the study of Majapahit history
